Leaders Evaluate Performances Then Train & Develop Skills of People

Aarti Iyer's brief, yet highly instructional post concerning strategic planning and the leader's role in its success, advises us to:

"Consider recognizing contributions to achievement of the plan, even if the individual did not have specific responsibility as outlined in their individual objectives. And, when setting future objectives, consider writing an objective that refers to the values expressed in the plan." I can suggest a few areas where people both add value and reflect the types of values needed for the organization's successful implementation of its strategic plans.

Because people purposely add value to the circumstances of their lives, I call each of those value-appreciating areas, a "capital asset". Wise leaders should use these areas in their evaluations and discussions of employee performance.

These assets or value-enhancing capabilities are:

Production - the ability to create, evaluate, perform, deliver, process, supply, execute, apply, produce and many other "functional" activities.

Knowledge - may be thought of as having an ability to think, analyze, conceive, extrapolate, interpret or translate and other mental, reasoning, cogitating or intellectual actions.

Social - the forming of relationships, communities, teams, partnerships or alliances, the developing and sustaining of networks, interactions, exchanges or transactions with and between other people.

Utilization - concepts involving capabilities towards, growing, improving, enhancing, evolving, developing, learning, educating and progressing beyond one's innate or natural ability - an ability to act towards and achieve the fulfillment of one's potential

Are you using your strategic plans to appreciate and leverage the "capital" contributions of your people?

In what ways could you use your strategic plan, its objectives, its perspectives or its vision to gather-up, covet and recognize the "net worth" of your group?

Do you feel a tinge of greed when you think of how much more you want the leadership skills of your people to grow, expand and enrich the organization?
